In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF SOCIAL REALISM GENRE
The Social realist film genre is the only type of fiction film which depicts real life and the events it entails. It commonly portrays the problems of class inequality and the struggles that directly effect working class, it confronts the consumer with problems and conflict these people are faced with. Social realism films as a cipher for delivering a political protest, brining a problem into the headlines or evoking sympathy.
Typical codes and conventions include:
- Drug abuse, street violence, crime, sexuality and murder
- Extreme poverty with an inhibility to provide for family
- Majority of characters working class
- Typically set in council houses and areas known for high crime and unemployment rates.
- Camera angles and shot are usually hand held and humanising
- Protagonist characters are usually rebels and are against the system or authoritative figures.
-Sound is usually enigmatic and mystifying
-Common light and dark binary opposition aka)light sining through trees juxtaposing with a dark shot of an alley
-Teenagers are usually used as they are no longer children nor adults
I have created a collage of our shots in contrast with Fishtank's trailer in order to highlight similarities and differences.
Common Themes that are in both include
-Close ups
-Establishing Shots
-Bass music
-Sexualising of teenagers
-Rebellion
-Violence
-Substance abuse
-Fast cuts
-A couple
-Practical clothing
-Titles at the end
We subverted from some codes an conductions in order to have a USP and evoke excitement.
We did the following to ensure our film was creative and forward thinking:
- Used higher class cast and mis en scene reflecting this
- Used Bass music instead of Indie music
- Use jump cuts instead of fades
However it was essential to conform to some codes and conventions in order for the consumer to associate our film wit the correct genre, we did this by:
- Using teenagers
- Using a narrative of rebellion
- Exploring teenage relationships
- Showing violence
- Portraying substance abuse
