PARTY SCENE:

{Close up of drink bottles, drugs, and mess from party General}

General: People chatting music and laughter. 

{Cut to group of boys talking – close up on Will before showing other characters}  

Boy friend 1: Alright Jack, you ok?

Jack: *no response*

Friend 2: Jack?

Jack: Oh yeah yeah (slurred)

{Cut to Meg with a group girls – close up on Meg before showing other characters}

Girl friend 1: Do you think you’re gunna take him back?

Emma: I’m not sure, I just wanna to go home to be honest, have you seen Jack? (distressed and drunk)

*Emma goes looking for Jack*

*Girl friend 1*

Girl Friend 1: Jack, are you okay I think Emma wants to go home

Jack: Ur yeah yeah I’ll come in a sec

Emma: Alright we’ll be by the car

*Shot of Jack’s face stumbling through the house*

Extra’s: Jack are you okay?{echoed}

Extra’s: Jack are you okay?{echoed}

CAR CRASH:

Emma: Jack, you ok to drive?

Jack: Yeah fine (slurred)

*sister and brother get in car, brother begins to lose focus and control of the car*

Emma: Jack! What are you doing!?

*Emma is emotional and shouting, holding onto the car as the car veers out of control*

The dialogue then ends when the car hits the tree.

The Casting Process

We felt it essential the our protagonists suited the age and maturity this film represents, also the style. We have taken headshots of people we are considering and have evaluated them. We are have also asked other potential candidates to perform a monologue for us to distinguish their acting talent. This will be shows in a later blog.

The Conventions of a Film Poster and Analysis

We have seen as a great a great importance in looking into film poster features and how they can represent the genre, narrative and mood, as well as interest viewers, through typical conventions.We have analysed Trainspotting which is a popular social realism film, which is the genre we have chosen. We can therefore now establish things we need to include in our poster or places where we would not like to conform to conventions.

Party Inspiration

The following shots show a real insight of what we wish to achieve from the party shots of our character named Jack.They have provided a great inspiration and clear idea in our head.

Juxtaposition with music

For shots of the party we really liked the way that this music video was created and clearly represented the obvious effects of intoxication  This shot is effective in the way it follows the protagonist and we are keen to recreate something in homage to this sort of shot.

We have used copyright free music over this music video to develop our idea further, this music video shows clearly the juxtaposition and binary opposition we will create.

We looked for some exemplar clips that demonstrated one of our key shots which is a close up of Jack's face walking through the party with dialogue in the back. After watching an example from Movern Callar we decided to attach a clip of classical music to a similar shot from Mean Streets.

Health and Safety

Things We Need to Consider

Location

Due to using a road it is essential for us to be aware and also respectful of other drivers. We cannot block the road and have to have the ability to quickly move the car if a car wishes to past. We must also leave the hazard lights on when dark so we are easily visible.

Cast
Due to it being an emotional trailer we need to keep the mental state of our cast well. We cannot expose them to emotional harm.We therefore have chosen a mature cast who know of the themes of the trailer and are comfortable with it. They also have had no traumatic traffic incidents and therefore no emotional distress will be caused.


Props

Due to the idea of youth culture and intoxication being highly present we are having cigarettes,drugs and alcohol present as props. However we have found safe substitutes so not to break the law and not expose our cast to things they may feel uncomfortable with . We will use empty bottles and pour away the alcohol, or use water to display vodka and juice to display wine. We will use herbal cigarettes which have no health effects, but we will also not allow our cast members to inhale the smoke and to portray cocaine we are using flour.


Car Crash

Due to our car crash being such an essential scene and our climax we need to make it are realistic as possible, however we do not actually want to crash. Our cast are all wearing seat belts, we have airbags installed, we are stopping considerably before the tree so to create the illusion of a crash but not put anyone at risk. We are using toy gas canisters so to not release harmful gas and using sugar glass which cannot cause harm.

Party Scene
No drugs nor alcohol are real. We will also keep our cast and extras hydrated and give them suitable breaks. They will also be advised to wear warm clothing due to it being shot outside to prevent hypothermia.

Sugar Glass Experiment

Sugar glass is frequently used in television programmes and in film instead of real glass which raises health and safety issues. It is easy to make and reduced risk of hurting one of our cast or leaving smashed glass at our location. The following is how we aim to create this

Location

We have chosen these locations and in a following blog I will post photos of these with pros and cons. One of the most essential things while picking location is to consider the health and safety of all. This is discussed in my other blog.

Sound

Script

The numbers on here correlate with the ones on the storyboard. The real theme of our trailer is enhanced diegetic sound which will increase the intensity and reflect the enhanced sense and paranoia that drugs cause. We will have dialogue however it will either be muted or muffled. Music will be played over these shots making dialogue difficult. Some shots from our storyboard have no sound except the soundtrack. The ones with sound are listed and described below.We decided to write 2 scripts one mostly revolving around enhanced diegetic sound (below) and one dialogue heavy. This allowed us to have a larger variety of clips after filming and also ignited inspiration

Juxtaposition and Inspiration

One of our key shots is Jack walking through the party highly intoxicated on alcohol and drugs, we had put on our storyboard that this was a close up . However, We looked for some exemplar clips that demonstrated this look. After watching an example from Movern Callar we decided to fix a clip of classical music to a similar shot from Mean Streets.We felt this juxtposition raised the pace of the film and created more drama.   We also learnt from different YouTube tutorials and music videos that a very effective way to display intoxication  and have a close shot is by the protagonist holding a tray with a camera on and filming themself in the party atmosphere. This is shaky due to it being hand held,close up and will raise tension for the viewer.

Car Crash Scene

This is a fantastically emotional scene I have found from an old Eastenders that directly correlates to the direction we wish to go in with our film. Not only is there a car crash, we have someone greiving and also have make up used  to create upset and emotion. I think this clip will stem a great amount of inspiration for us.

I watched this scene on Tv and was amazed by how realistic it looked, I truly felt like I was witnessing a car crash. Here Hollyoaks allow us to go behind the scenes and watch how it was shot. I have developed a further understanding of techniques and equipment used to film such an impactful shot. Due to being such a low budget film we can not purchase this kind of equipment however can take inspiration from the actors performance and damage made to the car

Timetable and Filming Schedule

In order to create are trailer organisation is vital in order to get the whole group,cast and equipment in the same place at the same time. We are excited to announce our first filming session has been arranged and we are eager to get going with this project. We have all the directors present and both actors we have selected, which will be show in following posts and properly introduced, we will also highlight how we chose them and our audition process.

Todorov's Narrative Theorey

Today Chrome Pictures looked into story narratives ,the general structure of them and how they may differ. We researched into Todorov's Theory and how we can apply it to our trailer. We watched "Fight Club" and applied the theory to it , we can now do this to our own film.

Social Realism

Social Realism is a film genre which shows the audience what true life and real situations are like. Famous film makers in this genre include Ken Loach, Shane Meadows and Mike Leigh.

After researching and mood boarding other genres we realised that social realism provided us with the most ideas and really ignited out imagination.

Teaser Vs Theatrical

We have come to the conclusion that we would like to make  a theatrical trailer. With us having a very simplistic narrative all centring round one event we felt it was essential to disclose this in the trailer for our audience to understand what the film was and the genre.

In our Prezi above we have compared the differences of the two in order to fully understand both in depth and make an educated decision.

Costume and Make up

We wanted the siblings clothing to be simplistic and unremarkable. This not only represents their characters but also allows the clothes not to detract from facial expression or be too colourful therefore steal the shot.

Emma will have make up on which will be quite natural juxtaposed to a heavier eye make up. This will allow us to create tear marks and smudge it after the crash. This contrast will hopefully scare the audience and also make the crash feel more realistic.

Jack will not be wearing any make up however after the crash we will put fake blood dripping from his ear and on his clothing which will be prominent on his light coloured clothing. We will also use a light powder on his face to make him look pale and therefore dead.

Potential Sound

From the offset all of us from Chrome Pictures had the image of our film trailer having a soundtrack with a heavy base played over it. This correlates with the popular music in youth culture today and also will heighten the audience fear and anticipation due to its increasing tempo and repetitive beat. We are using the song above as inspiration for when we create are own tune. We are also experimenting currently on the idea of haven certain moments of tension when we will overlap a string orchestra with the soundtrack to create climax's.

We also looked at the other songs including the following link. We chose to rule them about because if we chose to have any dialogue we feel the beat and background noises will make it hard to hear and also  detract from the narrative.

The Brief

This year our main task is to create a promotional package for a new film,to include a trailer which can be either a teaser trailer or theatrical. We also need to produce two ancillary texts which are a poster for the film and a website.
